Getting to know Miss Harris
INTRODUCTION:
I grew up in Smoky Lake and attended H.A.Kostash School. Growing up, I was a part of as many team sports as I could join. I acted in the production of "The lion, the witch, and the wardrobe", volunteered when ever needed, and loved to join as many afterschool events that I could handle. I have always enjoyed challenges and working with people. Teaching has been my career choice since I was 4 years old. At the age of 5, I created a mini classroom in my parents basement and taught my two younger sisters the kindergarten curriculum. I guess you could say that I was practicing my passion.
After high school, I attended the University of Alberta. I majored in Mathematics and minored in Physical Education. I have taken extra courses in drama, sciences, and counseling while I attended. Although these courses were not needed for my degree, I found them important for personal growth and skills that I would need in my future as a teacher. I graduated from the University of Alberta in December of 2009 with a Bachelors of Education.
I have back-packed through Western Europe, traveled to Alaska, Montreal, and the west coast of the United States. These experiences have opened my eyes to the beauty of Canada, the diverse cultures, diverse landscape, and made me realize how lucky we are to be Canadian.
I was blessed to get a job after graduating in my former school. H.A.Kostash School students, teachers, and parents welcomed me as the new grade one teacher. After Mrs. Cunningham returned from her maturity leave, I left to the city of Saskatoon and substitute taught in many schools. I learned a lot about culture, learning styles, teaching styles, and various family/student backgrounds, I came back to H.A.Kostash School and taught grade 5 half time and substitute taught all grades.
Recently, last school year, I worked and traveled abroad. It was a wonderful experience. I had the opportunity to climb a mountain beside Mount Doom off lord of the rings, enter a hobbit home, see glow worms, walk and dig a manmade hot tub on a beach with black sand, saw various animals (kangaroos, kolas, elephants, ect) , kayaked in a ocean, saw and experienced diverse cultures, diverse landscapes, and so much more. I was very lucky to add New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam to places I have been and learned so much about. I feel that all these experiences have enriched my education on cultures, government, nature, currencies, and dealing with obstacles along the way.
I am very excited to teach your children this year. They are wonderful and they make it easy to enjoy my job.
